We hear it all the time now, especially in health and wellness circles. But really, what is Mindset? More importantly, how important is Mindset?
Just what does Mindset really mean?
To some, it is Thinking Positively or focusing on a goal or things that makes you happy. Or it’s restricting and suppressing any negative thoughts. But is that all there is to it?
In order to truly understand Mindset, I believe we need to take a journey back to our first day as a Human Being on Planet earth. When we are born we arrived naked and not knowing or understanding much at all.
What a Journey!
Wouldn’t it have been awesome to be born and have all the knowledge and skills we need for the next eighty years or so! We could know how to walk, talk, drive a car, have healthy relationships, earn our desire amount of money and more right from the word ‘go’!
Unfortunately, we didn’t. Worse than that we had to work out how to be human for ourselves with a bit of help from our closest grown-ups. What a journey – a road of learning by trial and error!
As a result, we get to adulthood with an accumulated understandings and beliefs of how we think this world works, how we communicate with people, how to be successful (not not), how to find a lifelong partner and how to be ‘acceptable’ in the world where we live. This is our accumulated ‘mindset’ created and based on all that knowledge and experience, to make this thing called ‘life’ work.
Mindset influences....LIFE!
Mindset influences our self-talk, the boundaries we set (or not), the lifestyle we choose, the people we socialise with, our chosen partner and even the attitudes to food and eating!
Problems can occur when we choose to do something differently, such as a new diet, a new career goal or even restricting unhelpful friends. We might start off well but, as time goes, on we find ourselves back at the start. Mindset is a very powerful thing.
There are some helpful clues to creating a modified and even healthier mindset.
· Start off small and build up to the new activity
· Have a clear and realistic plan of action to commit to
· Celebrate your new achievements along the way
· Give your mind time to get used to the new activity
· Be careful of the deeper thoughts and attitudes that come up along the way
Having a Life Coach is a great way to move forward and create an even healthier mindset. A good Coach will see things that you may not be aware of and support you through the new change.
As you become even clearer of your mindset, ask yourself, “What things would I like to have as part of my life? What would I keep and what would I change?”
When you are looking to change anything in your life, chances are, it’s a good idea to check in on your mindset and see if that needs to be changed, too. We as Humans Beings are capable of creating a wonderful and fulfilling life. Make sure your Mindset wants to move in that direction, too.
