Food and Eating – The Most Intimate Human Experience of them All!

Updated: Oct 16, 2020

Food – at times we love it, we hate it, we ignore it, embrace it, judge it, desire it, even get angry with it! Sound familiar? It is a relationship that has it all!

So much of our life if centred around food, and rightly so, as we need it to survive. If you are like me, some of your most treasured memories probably happened around food – Family celebrations, birthdays, Christmas or other religious festival, a business deal or perhaps a romantic dinner.

Food is literally part of our being where we chew it, we digest it, we assimilate it, we eliminate it and part of it even becomes part of us.

It's Not Just The Food That We Eat

Eating is so much more than consuming food. As we eat we consume the conversations, we consume the atmosphere, we consume the connections, we consume the emotions and we even consume our thoughts. Each of these also have their unique “flavours” and “nutritional” characteristics that need to go through the process of being chewed, digested, assimilated and eliminated. These, too, also become part of us.

The modern fast paced life has reduced the experience of eating to eating on the run, eating while working, fast food, processed food and pre-prepared meals. And it is the fast pace, the stress, the anxieties, the focus on everyone else and the disconnection from self that also gets chewed, digested, assimilated and eliminated. How we experience life also becomes part of us and consequently affects our well-being. Our mind and body has an amazing connection. This is how the Human Body works.

Eating, like all relationships, requires presence, attention, desire, self-love, honesty, emotional connection and more. There is more to eating than just chewing some food.

As a Mind-Body Eating Coach I see the weight challenges, the chronic dieting, the binge eating, the overeating, the cravings, the emotional eating, digestive issues, the anxiety around food and more. Eating, like all relationships, requires presence, attention, desire, self-love, honesty, emotional connection and more. You see, there is more to eating than just chewing some food.

Make Eating and Intimate Experience

The next time you decide to eat pause, breathe, ask your body what it would like to eat. Find a quiet place and be there, relax, chew slowly, smell the aromas, taste the flavours, feel the textures of the food in your mouth. At the end of the meal notice how the food feels in your body. This process maximises eating enjoyment and promotes a healthy digestive, assimilation and elimination process. Eating is a whole body and mind experience.
